Senior Planner / Planning ManagerLocation: Glasgow, Warwick, or London (with travel to site as required) Project Context: The Great Grid Upgrade (National Grid)
Role PurposeTo act as the technical lead for scheduling and critical path management across high-voltage infrastructure, substation, and civil engineering projects. You will be responsible for ensuring project delivery remains within defined time parameters, providing actionable insight to project boards, and mitigating risk within complex delivery environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Integrated Scheduling: Develop, maintain, and own high-fidelity integrated project schedules (Primavera P6) for complex substation and civils works.
  • Critical Path Management: Identify bottlenecks, critical path delays, and resource constraints, and proactively provide recovery strategies to the Project Board.
  • Contractual Administration: Operate within NEC3/NEC4 (Option C) contract environments, supporting the commercial team with change control, compensation events, and time impact analysis (TIA).
  • Performance Analytics: Utilize Earned Value Management (EVM) to forecast delivery outcomes and report on performance variances to senior stakeholders.
  • Lifecycle Oversight: Support the entire project lifecycle, from planning and procurement through to contract delivery, handover, and close-out.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Clearly and punctually communicate vital scheduling information to senior managers and project teams using complex digital systems.
Requirements
  • Professional Experience: Proven track record in infrastructure project delivery, specifically within the power, tunnelling, or major civil sectors.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of Primavera P6 is essential.
  • Contractual Knowledge: Extensive experience with NEC3/NEC4 Target Cost (Option C) contracts.
  • Soft Skills: Ability to remain calm, analytical, and decisive under pressure when faced with high-risk, politically charged, or time-sensitive operations.
  • Education/Certification: Professional qualifications (MRICS, MCInstCES, or equivalent) are highly advantageous.
Why this role is criticalFor the Great Grid Upgrade, the schedule is the primary tool for risk management. You are not just tracking dates; you are protecting the integrity of a £19bn investment. Successful candidates will be those who can bridge the gap between technical construction reality and the high-level governance requirements of the National Grid.
